Not sure if this is a fossil?

Rocks n Relics

Recommended Posts

hello everyone, I'm a newbie here and with fossils and hoping y'all's experience can help me out...I live in Globe, Az and I find some awesome rocks and minerals...however I know nothing about fossils...I found this HUGE rock last year and everyone that see's thinks it might be fossils?

I do know the area was underwater "back in the day"...so we have lots of limestone conglomerates that formed.

The first picture is of a oval shape something that might be a fossil... it's roughly 4" by 2" width. It has lots of texture to it.

The parts I'm asking about that might be bone fossils is at it's tallest is 1 1/2 foot tall and roughly 4-5" wide at the top. There are two of the "bones" one in from of the other and they are the same shape and size.

The rock itself is roughly 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 feet tall/wide Weighs roughly 150 pounds.

Thank you in advance for help!

Nothing you have there looks like a fossil. Someone more well-versed in geology might be able to tell you what sorts of rocks/minerals you have there though.

Looks like chert nodules in sandstone or limestone.

I agree, no fossils.

The pictures after the cute cat are limestone with chert inclusions.  These things can take all sorts of weird and pseudofossily shapes.  Excellent example of the stuff.

Welcome from Scottsdale.

Chert in limestone. The acid rain hits the chert, drips down and selectively dissolves the limestone next to the chert leaving a trough.

The formation of the limestone and chert cannot be easily determined without good fossils. Devonian Martin Formation, Mississippian Escabrosa Limestone and the Naco Formation occur in the area.

It appears that you might have some green copper mineralization such as malachite on one piece. Most of the richest ores occurred in the limestones.

Thank you for the information and a funny story about the cat.... he isn't ours, he is a known local stray....I was cleaning up the yard and he wondered onto the property, played down and spread out and took at nap right there lol!
