Ammonite Hunting in Yorkshire

Welsh Wizard

Recommended Posts

Found this the other day. A huge pleuroceras in a big ironstone nodule.

I haven’t had much luck with these as every time I’ve prepped one, only the outer whorl is there. This time I smacked it with a hammer and spilt the ammonite.

Im going to get it glued and prepped from the other side. Fingers crossed it’s all there. The ammonite looks like it’s about 7 inches.

This is an ammonite from Robin Hoods Bay that I recently purchased. It’s a liparoceras sp. and whilst very common in Lyme Regis area, it’s very rare in Yorkshire. I found a partial one last year which I’m waiting to be prepped but I bought this as you don’t see many examples around.

This one is about 4.5 inches across and sits in an ironstone nodule.

That’s a beautiful specimen as you said very rare form Yorkshire. I found them in Cotswolds and Lyme Regis but the preservation is not as good as this one. Nice purchase mate

First find of the year. Hunting for ammonites and a fish turns up.

Split nodule from Jurassic, toarcian, upper lias. Identification of fish unknown.

I’ll have to get someone to prep it for me.

A nice large split dactylioceras commune. I found this specimen at Port Mulgrave near Whitby and I will leave it as is and not prep further.

When I have a close look on the scales I would assume it might be Pholidophorus

Hi @rocket. It’s been identified as a pachycormus sp.

i add a pic of the tail from a Pachycormide (last pic), has less scales

and one from a Pholi (pic in the middle) and one from an unknown one, think it is something like a Thrissops (first one)

all lower jurassic, toarc, like yours

perhaps it helps a bit

When we were in Whitby the other day, my wife found this bashed rock on the harbour beach.

That’s the little beach below where you can see the rock armour.

We had been for a walk around the town before going out for a meal so we weren’t looking for fossils but I picked it up and took it back to our cottage as we were staying in one of the white houses.

Glued together:

Just need to paint rock to blend in filler and I’m done.

Found last year and back from prep. A small multi block from North Yorkshire containing arnioceras sp. and Euagassiceras sp. I’ve not found a Euagassiceras before and they are quite rare from Yorkshire. Note, these rocks are really hard and difficult to prep. They can be quite soul destroying so I’m really pleased with how this has turned out.

Tidied the piece up above so you could see the Euagassiceras better. A bit pyritic in the centre but it has some lovely spines.
