Prepping a Crab Concretion with Dynamite!!!

RJB

Recommended Posts

As promised, here is episode 1 of my goofy fossil prepping video's.  A super cool and fun way of showing viewers a very comedic way of prepping out a fossil crab. I really did prep out this fossil crab. I'm such a goofy guy and with the help of my son Cory, this is what we came up with. This is episode 1 of more to come.

Next, you'll be applying the rarely used  'extreme freeze / deep fry method'.....  Stay safe, Ron.

Ron,

Tell Cory that Mr. Spielberg has competition. ;)

Tammy and I just finished watching the video--made our morning!

Cheers.

P.S.: Hmmm.... liquid nitrogen bath and then a turkey deep-frier? Possibilities. :P

Actually the deep freeze / microwave method works on Mazon creek concretions. Not as well as the deepr freeze / hydrogen bomb method, but much less expensive.

P.S. -- the freeze / microwave method is a real thing, but you have to wrap them in a towel because sometimes they explode.

I wasn't sure whether to file this under Fake News or Just Plain Fun, but I decided in the end to opt for the latter :P Here's lookin' at ya, Ron . Great idea! And excellently executed!

I only have one question:  "Did you really prep that crab concretion with dynamite?".  The video looked too real to be fake.  I wonder if dynamite will work prepping the specimens that come off my sons' Nebraska ranch?  :zzzzscratchchin: We might be able to prep a whole season's worth of specimens at one time and save a ton of money and time? :zzzzscratchchin:

I'm really in need of some sticks of dynamite.
The only problem will be that I will end up wasting my powder on some idiot.

Excellent presentation. Going over the method used I did find one thing that might have helped some. If I figured your calculations right and then added my own right you could add a metal 35mm film role holder (has to be the old metal ones not plastic) with 2.87 ounces of baking soda (sieved to .0025mm) placed 38.2mm away from the right side of the dynamite (1/3 way in from right end) leaning at a 39.6° angle away from the concretion. It "should" provide a cleaner finish saving you more time in the lab.
