Calvert Cliffs Finds

Hello all,

since I finally joined this awesome community, I decided to post these two I found many years ago at Calvert Cliffs, MD. The beaches yield marine fossils of Miocene era, shark teeth, shells, porpoise, whale, etc.

I’ve always assumed the bone was something really recent but hung onto it just in case. Always assumed the tooth was some sort of crocodilian but I don’t know if that makes sense.

That does look like a croc tooth to me, with part of the base broken off. They are occasionally found along the cliffs and usually are dark brown or black.

The bone appears to be a fish premaxillary (upper jaw). I can't tell if it is fossil or modern. Some of our fish experts might know who this is.

Hi,

Agree with what was said above for both pieces. And thank you for using the centimeter paper, good start !

I think this is modern bone. Most likely a terrestrial mammal.

Looking for a whale on my private collection, I stumbled across this photo: Looks like one from  @Harry Pristis

Interesting, the bone a perfect match; however, mine is a bit shorter, doesn't look as obviously fossilized, and doesn't have teeth holes. Strange

It has them. They are tiny and round. You can see them better if you zoom in on the picture.

really? i believe you but I'm having trouble finding the holes myself. Could you circle them? If you need a more overhead photo, I can take more.

The whole surface is covered with them. There are three in the circled area.

Here are some similar jaws that were covered with teeth from this website-https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/fishatlas/content/display1480.html?id=1480

Ah! Wow that's a lot of teeth! They were right under my nose this whole time, I didn't expect them to cover the jaw. Fascinating! Thanks for the link.
