corycatfish
Hello everyone! My name is Lily and I'm happy to be joining the forum. I think I may have found my first fossil! I don't want to get my hopes up but I'm pretty excited. Out of my 20 years on this Earth of picking up random rocks in hopes of finding a fossil, I think I finally did it. I found it in Southern Illinois about 30 mins from STL, MO while I was gardening for my grandma. I dug a shallow hole for the plant & hit the rock. I can try to get clearer pictures if needed. Let me know if you need any more information as well. I'd like to know everything you can tell me about it! Thanks so much
Mikrogeophagus
Welcome to the forum! I think I'm seeing bits of bryozoan and brachiopods among other things. Btw, cory cats are my favorite type of aquarium fish! Fun fact: the peppered cory catfish was discovered by Charles Darwin himself! 1
Fossildude19
What county was this found in? A bunch of different geologic ages are represented in South Western Illinois. 2 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." hemipristis
The rock is a limestone comprised of a fossil hash of various critters. As EPIK noted, bits of fenestrate Bryozoa as well as brachiopod shell fragments can be seen. The Bryozoa are circled I the pic below 1 'Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.'
