When you do buy one, post it so we can see it.

Buying Indonesian wood slabs directly from Indonesia is an adventure.  A lot of bad sellers mixed in with the good sellers.  Prices are a lot cheaper than local dealers, but shipping costs and bad sellers are a real problem.

Yes, will show it if / when I do buy it.

Will only do so from local suppliers. Can't be bothered with dealing with overseas sellers whom I don't know if reliable, and the added shipping costs.

Great thread and wonderful pieces!

Would love to see a close-up of a caddis fly larva, if you've managed to identify a good example. A few years ago a friend of mine asked me to take a look at some of his pieces of petrified wood with "caddis fly tubes" from Indonesia. In the specimens I've looked at, all I could discern were ostracod moults and palm roots in varying preservation. The ostracods occurred both between and within the tubular structures. Caddis flies build their tubes by "gluing together" sand grains; the tubular structures I've seen showed no grainy internal structure but rather concentric layering. These observations would be in line with partially rotten palm rootlets, I think. Perhaps the ostracods lived in the submerged and partially rotten palm roots (ostracods are known to occupy some of the waterlogged wood from Blue Forrest). I've never been able to identify any caddis fly remains, though...

No, I hadn’t identified a good example of a Caddis fly lava.

I just looked at this supposed Caddis Fly slab again to try to find a lava, and wound up looking at the slab for a couple of hours under the microscope because it was so interesting, lots of interesting features, shapes and inclusions.  However, there were so many tubular structures infilled with lots of debris of different shapes, that it was hard to really know what I was looking at.  I also saw a lot of tubular structures with concentric layering, so it is doubtful that they were made by Caddis flies.  I did see a couple of interesting shapes.  See the first two pictures.  First picture, center of picture, probably an Ostracod?   Second picture, again center of picture, probably waterline banding?  I saw a lot of shapes that reminded me of Ostracods.   I attached a number of pictures of these.  If these are Ostracods, the slab is loaded with them.  Then there are a few pictures of spherical inclusions.  There were also a few other interesting shapes that I took a few pictures of, which are at the end of the pictures.  I could have taken many more pictures of interesting tube debris, but I didn’t think there was evidence of Caddis fly lava in them.

Thanks for the interesting images. Looks like your specimen is loaded with ostracod moults too... It is wonderful material with lots, lots to see!

The boring holes are made by marine Teredo clams.  The holes fill with minerals as the wood fossilizes.  I have a good bit of Teredo wood from different countries and have not noticed a fossilized Teredo Clam in any of it.
