New Members Lysmata29 Posted July 24, 2022 New Members Share Posted July 24, 2022 Hi there! I saw a fossil at an antique show recently marked as a Geocoma carinata and was wondering if it was real or fake; it looks almost too good to be true, and I would really appreciate some expert input! DPS Ammonite
At the least, it probably has been colored brown from the original white. Note white spots on top of arms. See photo and description of a real one for comparison from collections. My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned. FranzBernhard
Replica / cast is a possibility? Or pure artistic imagination and artwork? Franz Bernhard
rocket
Depends, some or them are partly original and partly engraved, some (most of the hugher ones...) are totally done with an engraver. I do not like fakes, but I like the artwork of the moroccan workers, some of them are really good artists. And some do funny things This one I think is perhaps a good engraving, but always better to see blue-light-pics
Mousehead
Two things to see here for future fake fossil speculation: 1) Little air bubbles from the cast drying process 2) Scuffs on the surface revealing white (plaster?) underneath It's too perfect as well. Buy the ugly ones, I say. Definitely fake – stay away from these and their ilk. Happy hunting
