New Members DMO Posted September 13, 2022 New Members Share Posted September 13, 2022 (edited) Hello! My first post here after spending all afternoon searching the internet to no avail! I found this object this morning while walking at low tide on the very south end of Topsail Island. I’ve found tons of shark’s teeth over 45 years at Topsail but nothing like this. Thank you for your help! Edited September 13, 2022 by DMO More specifics in title
Shellseeker
Looks like a rib bone. Please wash off the sand, give us another photo. With that last photo, might be alveoli (tooth holes)... then it would be jaw... what is the length ? New Members DMO Posted September 13, 2022 Author New Members Share Posted September 13, 2022 Thank you so much for your reply! Here are some pictures of it cleaned up. I’m at my parents’ beach house, so I’m a little limited on rulers, etc. Using the Measure app on my phone, it measures 4 1/2 in long. I placed a playing card next to it for reference. I hope these new pictures are helpful. Thank you!

I am more on the possibility hood of this being a marine mammal rib. It is about the right size and shape and you did find it on a beach... Looks like it could be the broken end of this photo... or Like I said.. possibility ... likelyhood.... no guarantees.. Shellseeker
In attempting to identify @DMO's fossil, a search popped up this photo from a research paper written by someone name Boessenecker. Tracked down the paper and it is pure gold, available on research gate.... 4 or 5 years back, I found a bunch of ribs at a location, ribs but no teeth or ear bones or.... Always wondered if they were dugong or dolphin or what.... I finally settled on "what"... Access and download the paper... https://www.researchgate.net/publication/320955269_New_records_of_the_dolphin_Albertocetus_meffordorum_Odontoceti_Xenorophidae_from_the_lower_Oligocene_of_South_Carolina_Encephalization_sensory_anatomy_postcranial_morphology_and_ontogeny_of_early_odon 1 The White Queen ".... in her youth she could believe "six impossible things before breakfast"
New Members DMO Posted September 13, 2022 Author New Members Share Posted September 13, 2022 @Shellseeker, wow! This is so interesting and informative! Thank you so much for sharing your insights and the research paper. I have never studied paleontology and find this all so fascinating. I noted in the research paper that it referenced Onslow Beach, which is just north of Topsail Beach. I’m excited to learn more so feel free to share anything else! I’m here for another week, so I’m hoping I’ll find more surprises during my beach walks. Dawn
