ckam888
Hi guys. I found this near Charleston, SC a while back. probably in the Edisto, but I honestly can't remember. It has been in a bucket of miscellaneous fossils for about two years. Anyway, I can't figure out what animal this might have come from. I hope one of you all can help. Thanks a million. ckam888
Thanks Troodon. I would never have figured that out. I actually may have found it at Aurora, not Charleston. Thanks again.

The small ones (approx 2.5-3cm at the tallest portion of the hyperual) are attributed to the bonito, genus Sarda. Those the size you have are attributed to actual tuna, genus Thunnus. I am not aware whether anyone has tried to speciate these beyond genus level. Hypurals are fairly common from Aurora, and the preservation looks the same as mine from that locality.. What's nice about yours is that the vertebra end is pretty much intact. Nice piece PS. I've had some fine seafood in Calabash!
