Preparation of fish fossils from Santana Formation Brazil

Recommended Posts

Hi there

After a long time, I prepared two fish from Santana Formation Brazil.
ATharrhias Araripis and a Paraelops Cearensis, 54cm long.

I am always wondering, if I am the only one with a passion for these unique three dimensional fossils.

Usually I buy them on Internet Auctions, so there is nothing illegal, means there no recent imports from Brazil.

Would like to meet some People here, who have the same passion. I am just beginning to prep fish fossils, so some experiences would be highly appreciated.

regards

Hi they are beautiful specimens indeed. I personally only have one in my collection now and it is not great in preservation . I did have much nicer ones in the past.

This is a great  thread by our friend Kris . His work is also fantastic and one day I have to buy one from him. Enjoy Bobby

You have some very very nice specimens!  Ive only prepped out 3 concs from Brazil but 2 of them were horrible.  Here is the one I kept.  Vinctifer comptoni

they are not easy to prep, best is to get them closed and prep them with air pen carefully.

Really well done what I see, good work. Fishes from this site are definitely some of the best fossils to get on the market...

Beautiful Vinctifer! Like the well preserved head. Very rare.

Yes, they are often in very bad shape, because the people who opened them in Brazil for the Tourist markets (the past) destroyed most of them…

Sometimes, they even glued fragments of different species together.

But with a little bit of luck and a trained Eye, you can find some specimens, which have quite a big preparation potential.

Here is a Calamopleurus, which also received a little fine tuning ;)

It‘s not the nicest specimen, but anyway, one of my favorites in my collection.

Latest Specimen :)

Thought in the beginning it was an Tharrhias, but now it seems more like an juvenile Paraelops…

The fish measures 34cm.

what do you think?

I use linseed oil and I do a final finish with Mellerud (Marble care product). It works pretty well.

Shoe polish brushes give a great result.

As I explained already, I am a beginner in preparation of fossils ;) learning by doing

the first fossils I did, I will not post!!! :shakehead:

not easy to say, comparing skull and scales I think it is a hugh Rhacolepis, they can reach up to 40 cm sometimes
