New here. Trying to figure out what this is. I found it along a creek bed near Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. Inside reminds me off bone marrow, but I'm not sure it's a bone. Any ideas?

Hello jsp1217 and welcome to the forum!

Allthough the structure looks a bit like it,I do not think this is a bone. Rather a fossil of some marine creature like a sponge.

Nice find!

Others more familiar with you region  may be able to tell you more.

Best Regards,

J

Stromatoporoids commonly encrust other objects. Possibly something that had been bioeroded ?

Thank you. I started thinking marine related that based on the area, but had a hard time finding a similar picture. Thank you all for the info, I guess wishful thinking had me hoping it was a bone of some sort

Some might say a nice stromatoporid is better than a chunk of bone, which would have been to broken to ID further anyway.

Its a matter of taste of course.

J
