DD1991
Although Stygimoloch and Dracorex are now recognized as growth stages of Pachycephalosaurus, Platytholus is only the second taxon of non-pachycephalosaurin pachycephalosaurine to be described from Lancian-age deposits in western North America, the other being Sphaerotholus buchholtzae, indicating that the diversity of non-pachycephalosaurin pachycephalosaurs is not as uniform as previously thought. The cladistic analysis of Platytholus recovers this genus as closely related to the Asian taxon Prenocephale and the late Santonian-early Campanian genus Acrotholus from Canada, indicating that pachycephalosaurines more derived than Stegoceras probably began immigrating to North America by the Santonian-early Campanian.
