It did say they "scooped it out of the mud" so it sounded like a natural find, but on the other hand you do find odd items discarded or lost in odd places on occasion... I once found a piece of a Brazilian Ocho/Oco geode in the ditch along the Island Highway by an outcrop I was scouring for fossils a couple years ago.
