HI! My name is Tammy Perlmutter and I'm a Master Naturalist with the Forest Preserves of Cook County in Northeastern Illinois. One of our class manual chapters was on Illinois geologic formations. We took a field trip to Sagawau Canyon Nature Preserve and got to see Silurian fossils in dolomite that were uncovered when the area was a quarry. I fell in love with them and now I can't get enough!

I'm passing by Mazon and/or Danville in a few weeks and was wondering if it was possible to get access to the Danville shale pit location? Or Mazon?

Nice to meet you all!

No, it is private property. Join ESCONI and come on a field trip there in the fall.

The Mazon public collection areas are now overgrown with summer vegetation. Best collected in early spring, but if you can handle dense vegetation, ticks, thorns, poison ivy and mosquitoes then go for it! ESCONI also has trips to the Bracevile spoil pile and the Illinois & Michigan Canal "preservation society?" has a trip to the creek itself, both twice annually if I'm not mistaken. Join ESCONI for less than two meals at MacDonald's -- it's worth it.

P.S. -- Welcome from Des Plaines.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
