Yes, it looks like a lot of the polished wood pieces I've seen coming out of Madagascar.

I can't imagine someone faking petrified wood (unless it was a rare type, opalized or a massive piece). Otherwise it wouldn't be worth the effort.

A bit of suspicion when acquiring a new fossil is completely understandable and actually wise.

Even a tad of paranoia is quite acceptable. 

But not too much. 

This piece is absolutely genuine.:)
