Brachiopod Confusion in the Waldron Shale

IDing my Waldron Shale finds is going well, but I hit a snag when getting to Atrypa. My research shows Atrypa reticularis is a common brachiopod found in the Waldron. Also mentioned was Atrypa newsomensis, for which I could not find a picture or description of.  My finds include what look like two different Atrypa species but could be the same. There are smarter members than I that hopefully can set me straight on this.

The first specimens  are what I feel are Atrypa reticularis.

The next group are much more ornate. They remind me of  Spinatrypa beulla of the Devonian.

Atrypa reticularis, Atrypa reticularis newsomensis, Atrypa newsomensis, take your pick. The second option is probably the most accepted one. though I prefer the third as I believe that A. reticularis is a bit of a "wastebasket" taxon.

I think the 'spiny' ones are Atrypina disparilis, which is a very variable species.

See about halfway down this page for my thoughts on Waldron Atrypa and the following post for my tiny Atrypina which are a bit different to yours.

@Tidgy's Dad, had not noticed your Waldron collection. If you are missing some things that I have, once I post my trip report, let me know and I can check with the post office.

Well, it seems I was wrong again.

The frilly ones showing "proto-spine bases" would seem to also be Atrypa. They are much too big for Atrypina.

Some sources mix them all up as Atrypa reticularis, Atrypa reticularis newsomensis or Atrypa newsomensis, but a few seem to me to suggest that the standard ones are Atrypa reticularis and the frilly ones A. reticularis newsomensis or A. newsomensis.    Pullinghairout.gif.89ab556e4847b9860b697be89cdeada0.gif
