FossilDAWG
It's great that you could get out with your son. That's an investment of time that will pay great dividends. We have had posts recently that the site at the eastern area of the canal was posted due to dumping of new (and unfossiliferous) dredging material. I assume that is no longer the case, or you were at a different part of the canal? Don 1

I was told, however, that the area is technically off limits for safety reasons, so proceed with caution. dozer1028
Yes there is new activity in the north side and new materials but old piles are still available. Hopefully they keep it available to us. No signs or postings of safety or trespassing much like my last visit a year ago.
dozer1028
The mud or the depth of the mud is really the only concern I see in the area. Looks like one spot a deer had been trapped for some time digging its way out.

sixgill pete
It is always a great trip when you get to spend it with a youngster. I miss the days seeing my kids and grandkids faces light up when they found something that excited them. The joy and the smiles from them ALWAYS made my day. The first time I ever heard my grandson Nick use a bad word was at a local quarry many years ago. He was around 10 at the time (22 now). I was 15 or 20 feet from him along a long pile of material. All of a sudden, I heard holy s%%%! I looked over about to say something, he was holding up what turned out to be a near perfect 3 &15/16-inch long auriculatus. I really could not scold him for that. A great memory. Glad you two had a great day and made some good finds!! Looks like one spot a deer had been trapped for some time digging its way out. When I last visited the property I ran into workers responsible for the dredging. They said that due to safety concerns about the depth of the mud, the property is no longer open to collecting. They said that there was a "do not enter" sign that someone had taken down. Whether they simply told me this to get me to leave or it is official ACOE policy, I am not sure. At the very least I did not want to test the mud if what they told me was true about the instability of the mud. I encourage you to be careful. 1 Follow me on Instagram (@fossil_mike) to check out my personal collection of fossils collected and acquired over more than 15 years of fossil hunting!
