Tackling a Specimen in Dolostone

Baking Geologist

Recommended Posts

I am wanting to tackle extracting whatever this dark fossil is.  But I’ve done very little fossil preparation (other than dissolving stuff with HFl but that’s a story for another day).

This is from the Racine Formation from Quarry Park and I picked up a bunch of other pieces to work on for practice.  I’m not used to handling dolostone.  I grew up with the Mississippian of Indiana, specifically Bloomington-Bedford area.

Any suggestions welcome.

I am having a hard time figuring out, what and where the fossil is. Would you like to point it out?
Thanks!

Thank you!

It doesn´t stand out much in the pics. What do you think could it be?

I’m guessing brachiopod or a chert layer based on what I saw in other samples. But the darker color intrigues me.

If its chert, you could it tackle with acid?

I need to get some acid.  Among other things….

I've never done much prep and never done any prep of dolostone samples.  So I’m building a toolkit and looking for a good magnifier that will work over my glasses.
