Toast123
It was collected from Bou Dib Formation near Mrakib. Im wondering if they are authentic or fake. Why is the stone they’re on a different color than the rest of the rock?
Fossildude19
These pictures are not good enough to determine anything. We would need in focus well lit photos of the back of each trilobite, looking straight down. Pictures from all sides where the trilobite meets the rock. And a picture of the back side of the rock. These are found by breaking the rocks open, determining if there is a trilobite inside, then glued back together to prep out. We need to see if there are cracks through the trilobites. Also need to see detail to insure that the trilobites are not molded resin. The spiny one looks a bit suspicious to me, but wait for other opinions. The rock is a different color, because the scribe marks have been removed, making the lighter color show more. 2 2 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Kane
i agree with Tim's assessment. It might also be of use to see the other side of the rock to discern if there has been any joining of separate pieces. The fact that they took the time to prepare some moulted bits does point to this piece being probably authentic, and Cyphaspis is relatively common. That said, it is also quite common that the thoracic and genal spiines are either broken off for preparation separately before being glued back on, or restored entirely. 4 1 ...How to Philosophize with a Hammer
aeon.rocks
It's obvious that these bugs are real even from these bad photos! And who would fake a common proteid and cyphaspis walteri? The spines are glued, because they are removed during the prep, normal technique. Matrix - rock around trilobites is flattened with a scribe for aesthetic reasons, that's why it occures lighter color than the rest of just split matrix/rock. Happy New Year! Psittacosaur9
Those trilobites look painted to me.
Isotelus2883
I believe that is simply the natural colour of the trilobite shell.

They are often coated in shoe polish or paint to hide the ding marks left from the preparation process. 2 2 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Isotelus2883
That is true, but I think the restored portions of the trilobite have a different shade and consistency than the rest of the shell. Edited January 21 by Isotelus2883
