New Members IowaRocker Posted January 23 New Members Share Posted January 23 I have recently discovered my interest in rock hounding. From my small/moderate amount of research, I am guessing that this is Stromatolite. I found it in a yard bordering a graveyard in Maquoketa, IA. I would love to know a little more about it,. It weighs right around 4 lbs. At the one end, it appears that some form of fossil had burrowed in.
FranzBernhard
Welcome to TFF from Austria! Hm, I am not sure if this is a stromatolite. Would you like to provide close up pics of #1 and #3? I would like to see if there is any regular internal structure. Thank you! Franz Bernhard

Al Dente
Stromatoporoid is another possibility.
Rockwood
The uniform thickness of the layering does suggest stromatoporoid. The structure might be there, but we need to get just a bit closer.
westcoast
I'm not seeing either stromatolite or stromatoporoid in this. Maybe close images might change that.
New Members IowaRocker Posted January 24 Author New Members Share Posted January 24 I took more pictures at what is hopefully close up enought. If not, I am open to any suggestions regarding using an iphone 12. Thank you for all of the feedback. I am very humbled by it and the knowledge.
FranzBernhard
Thanks for the additional pics! Still not sure. At least not a piece of a clam shell. Stromatoporoid is still a possibility. Franz Bernhard
Rockwood
I've found many pieces of material very similar to this mixed in with tabulate corals and recognizable stromatoporoids. I've also read about algae being a significant component of reefs. Could this be such an alga?
