dries85
Could this actually be a part of crab shell, i've read about Coeloma rupeliensis been found in this region.. Don't know much about crabs and what i should pay attention to so i might be totally wrong. Toothed whale Orca sized? and then this strange concretion which made me think lobster shell cast at first, but not sure anymore.. This particular shark tooth i think is an Isurus subserratus, or maybe i want to see serrations instead of damage 🤔
dries85
Went out hunting the river shores for a few hours today. At first it didn't seem to come along and i was even pleased with this broken I. oxyrinchus.. But even more pleased with this small Otodus angustidens.. Then they started coming along. Some nice smaller teeth.. First mammal tooth of the day, bovine i think.. Heartbreaking piece of Meg.. Then i found this really nice piece of coral, though it doesn't fit in with the mostly Neogene finds i think.. Another partial O. Angustidens.. Finally some better quality big teeth as always amidst the piles of bricks.. after that it was mammal time again and i finished off my trip with these.. That partial bovine upper jaw will probably come in handy for learning tooth positioning 😁 Had a quite satisfying hunt today, great weather, great finds 😎

If you mean the one in the middle, it's actually a 5,8cm C. hastalis. But i agree, amazing color. 1

dries85
So this coral seems to turn out Miocene/Pliocene in age as well. Flabellum sp. has been found in Antwerp before.

dries85
Yesterday i took a day off at work to hunt the river shores again. The low tide was going to be -70cm below zero, so very promising.. I left early to get as much hunting time as possible, only to run into this... All the roads toward the port of Antwerp were blocked by protesting farmers. They put up roadblocks on pretty much every crossroads in the area, only allowing people to drive through when they felt like it. The farmers want fair prices for their products and laws that don't kill their businesses, which i totally sympathize with, but bad timing tho.. After two hours of waiting they finally let me pass and i was just in time to catch the water at it's lowest.. Pretty cool to walk on a spot that only appears to the surface a few times a year, no interesting stuff though except for this piece of antique.. No great shark teeth today tho, all the gravel seemed to be covered by sand and muck.. After almost 2 hours of finding nothing some fairly recent looking mammal teeth showed up.. And then on my way home i found my best tooth of the day, a not so bad hastalis.. Not quite what i expected, but nevertheless nice to be outside anyway. And i only had to wait for an hour on my drive home 👍
SPrice
Nice finds! That first specimen looks like a "Singer rustosaurus". 1
Balance
I can’t believe you didn’t wanna carry the old Singer home 😂😂probably had a beautiful wrought iron base at some point. Might have been a bargaining tool. “Gently used” sewing machine for speedy passage. I made a table out of base parts. Still works too! It’s in the room I’m not really allowed in because generally speaking I’m too dirty. love the reports!! Jp

Jp My girlfriend happens to be a seamstress by profession, so we already own too many old sewing machines already. Though she was quite amused with the picture, it seemed better to save some space for fossils too...

Bjohn170
It’s a shame so many of the teeth get so beat up from the sites you collect. But when you get a complete one they are always very nice
dries85
On thursday 2/15 i had some hours left after work to hunt. Did some scouting for new possible hot spots by the river shores in the port of Antwerp. On my walk from the car to a place where i could easily access the river shore i already spotted one of those clay pipes in quite good shape, very promising. After looking through some gravel spots by the water i found another one. Not much later the first shark tooth popped up in a more mucky spot.. Just a lucky find tho, so i decided to head on. After a while i came across a more promising gravel spot... Pretty soon some various recent looking mammal teeth showed up.. After more than an hour of scanning the surface only 2 damaged pieces of shark tooth turned up, no new honey hole 😔 had a fun hunt in the sun with a fairly warm 17°C for the time of the year... Decided to take the short way back to the car, since the tide was already too high to walk back by the shore. While enjoying the view over the port of Antwerp i suddenly came across some wasteland with a lot of broken shell material... Decided to give it a fast look and then i saw something blue-ish just lying practically on the surface.. VID20240215171231.mp4 My first C. carcharias ever! And a pretty nice one too, actually this really made my day 😀 Searched this spot for another half hour, but no single other tooth to be found strangely enough... Here's the day's finds all cleaned up.

dries85
Had another quick hunt on friday 2/16. No spectacular finds this time, here's some pics tho.. most teeth were very well hidden today, which makes it cool to find them anyway.. VID20240216142703.mp4 VID20240216153055.mp4 And here's the whole lot cleaned up.. We're having some stormy weather here tonight so hoping to get out again soon 😁
automech
An un-spectacular day hunting fossils is way better than a good day at work. That's still a nice little haul you got there. Instead of surface collecting, have you ever thought of using a hard rake to turn over the cobble stones and gravel? I'd venture to say there may be more fossils under the surface.

Both are quite arduous tasks, too much gravel and debris to turn over and too much clay right under the gravel deposits to sift... Both methods actually delivered less interesting stuff in the same span of time than just surface hunting. I figured the water, wind and the tide are just way better in turning and washing clean fossils...

dries85
Got out early this morning to hunt some Schelde river shores. The weather was quite stormy the last days so i was hoping to pick the fruits of that. Got a good start finding this mammal tooth Well hidden inside it's cave.. First shark tooth of the day was a worn P. benedeni. More mammal and shark teeth.. Then exactly on the same spot as always, some pieces of Otodus. And then the beauty of the day, a nice C. hastalis in the rain.. Yet another bovine tooth... To finish off with this shiny sand tiger in the sun 😎 Not bad but i didn't feel quite ready for the day.. So i decided to pay my father-in-law a visit and also the clay quarry next to his backyard 😏 Wasn't really that well prepared, with only a manual sifter, as my big sifter is sitting in the garage waiting for repair. After crossing some fellow fossil hunters telling me the good times were over in this quarry, while showing off some pretty decent hastalis teeth. These guys came all the way from Amsterdam to hunt this spot, a 2 hour drive (and yeah over here that's a lot 😆), so it can't be that bad.. I found myself a good spot and got to work. It's all about finding the right layer with Miocene gravel here. The rusty brown layer on top of the greenish glauconite sands is the one i'm looking for. Occasionally a nice C. hastalis pops up in the sifter.. But the soil is quite wet and sticks to the gravel and teeth, also killing my back with the manual sifter so after 3 hours i decided to call it a day. Found this one on the surface on my way back.. It was great to hunt 2 different locations in one day, feels like a proper fossil hunting trip 😀 Time to get these teeth cleaned up!
