A fossil within a fossil

I am a gemologist, and I didn't discover that there was a cocoon within it until I cut and polished it.

For just over a decade I have been a rockhound, collector of minerals (gemstones) and investor.

One thing I have found is that you can often find fossils inside gemstones, but you can also find gemstones within fossils. I recently found some stunning precious fire opal within petrified wood.  I know as gemologist I should have a good idea of what the value would be for a cocoon amber piece, but I honestly have no clue whatsoever.

The precious fire opals in petrified wood I understand the value of. Can anyone help me with an idea of what the amber cocoon piece could be worth? It is 137.82 carats. It is a very beautiful, well saturated yellow amber and it's some kind of giant moth cocoon believed to be Morrisonnepa jurassica. I don't know if that is a reliable source on the moth or not.

Anyone have an idea on a possible value range...I know that many factors come into play, but given the information I've shared here along with the pictures, someone out there should have a pretty good idea on the value.

Cordially,

Morrisonnepa jurassica is a water scorpion, a heteroptera and not a moth. Water scorpions do not have cocoons.
Unfortunately the photos of the "cocoon" are so bad and out of focus that you can't recognize what it is.

Be not ashamed of mistakes and thus make them crimes (Confucius, 551 BC - 479 BC).

  • Fossildude19 changed the title to A fossil within a fossil

Moved to FOSSIL ID.

As stated, the Fossil Forum does not provide monetary value assessments.

This is not a fossil, for me.
Looks like chert or quartz.
