Mystery Carboniferous Fossil

I found this rock in North Attleboro. Massachusetts. It has what I assume is a fossil on it. My best guess would be a seed of some kind but the small circular thing to the right of it is throwing me off. I am away from home right now so I have nothing great to scale it with. The box is roughly 2 inches (5 cm) long to give a sense of scale. I will try to get better pictures when I get back if necessary.

Most likely a shell imprint i get a lot of these in my Carboniferous rocks and a lot of them are smooth so dont leave any distinct features

It seems a bit small for most Pteridosperms, but being so incomplete, and with the way seeds tend to vary in size, I don't think it can be ruled out. I agree that the evidence is not good enough to make an identification, however.

The site is a terrestrial site, and no shells have been found there.

Seed is a much more likely probability.

Why would you? No worries, Brian. :)

Just wanted to set the record straight on the type of site.

Definitely rules out shell fossils.

Im thinking it probably is a seed too. Looking at it under the microscope hardly gives any more detail.
