Howdy all,

This is a piece of petrified wood My Dad found I believe in Knob Noster. I've been observing Calamites fossils and I think this might be a piece of calamites stem, though I need another opinion.

In the last image it certainly does look similar, but I really can't tell very well with these pictures. Is there any possibility of taking pictures from different angles and with better lighting?

Dampened the specimen, contrasted, and saturated.

I don't really have a better suggestion, but it would be a really poor preservation.

The lack of nodes argues against Calamites, for me.

@Fullux What is the size of this? Calamites are known to survive burial to some depth. Shoots that are reaching for the surface might not have closely spaced nodes.

About 13 inches.

I'm not saying this definitely is Calamites, but I don't think the lack of nodes in that distance on a piece of this diameter is that much of a contraindication.

It may be an internodal section. I have a couple in my collection. However, the striations seem a bit too irregular for Calamites.

Mark.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
