West Viginia petrified wood

I was visiting a friend in West Virginia who is preparing his property for building his home. It's just south of Charleston. I noticed what I think is a layer of petrified wood. Not sure though. Any information would help. There were also petrified nuts.

That's not wood,  it wouldn't be in a layer,  though I can't say exactly what kind of rock it is.  Your nut is a concretion and a convincing one!  The rest of the rocks look like ironstone concretions.

Looks like a bed of more resistant siltstone/shale that is sandwiched between less resistant layers of mudstone/shale. Not a fossil, but an interesting picture of the areas stratigraphy!

Agree that these don’t look like petrified wood, but did want to say that A-I was born and raised in South Charleston, hey! And B-there is petrified wood to be found there though I’m not sure of the specifics on where. I have a couple nice pieces from when my grandfather dug the foundation of his house. Keep looking!
