Unknown marine fossil-NJ USA

OverCaffeinated

Recommended Posts

I am new to fossil collecting and I have a bit of a mystery on my hands, any help would be appreciated.

I found this fossil in NJ (USA) in an area well known for late Cretaceous marine fossils (shark teeth etc). I have been told that it is a claw from a ghost shrimp, but I’m struggling to verify that-honestly to my naive eye it looks like a starfish arm.

This is an image from my microscope, it is approximately 1 cm in length.

thanks!

Believe shrimp claw is correct, I have a few from the similarly aged Peedee formation in NC. There are also sea urchin spines, but this does not look like of those. Others may be more sure - lots of very experienced Big Brook hunters here

Agree with ghost shrimp claw. Wait for further opinions to rule out crab though.
