Is this Basilosaurus Jaw real?

Recommended Posts

Considering purchasing this item, and the seller had mentioned there were some reconstructions that would naturally have to be done, the question is how likely is it authentic? I find myself not very trustworthy of fossils from Morocco.

It looks good to me, If the price is OK for its minor restorations (wich seem to be very minor, i dont see any of it) i dont see anything wrong here.

But wait for others opinions, maybe i overlooked something.

Are good signatures really that important ?

Teeth look placed in

I dont think they're placed in. I've seen multiple Basilosaurus jaws and all the teeth stood out a little bit.

I must say that i the case of basilosaurs from my experience is harder to conclude if a tooth has been added. A lot of material is found i really rough conditions and has matrix around the tooth socket so it's hard to check if it was found like that or the tooth has been added. For example this is a basilosaurus jaw 100% original and I sais around the sockets is a mess, some tooth are more clean but other has tones of matrix.

That would explain why Moroccan Basilosaurid teeth are so often in bad shape.

There's no such thing as too many teeth.
