Michael1
I found this tooth on a dredge island in georgia it’s probably the biggest piece of megalodon tooth ive ever found and was wondering if theres any experts that could say how big the tooth was whole. Ive done some speculating with a drawing but wanted other opinions.
Fin Lover
I'm not an expert, but the root looks too big to me. Based on where the bourlette is, I would guess it was 4-5 inches. Edit: the crown looks too large as well. Michael1
I was also basing it on dr.Hubbell’s 7 inch megalodon tooth. Along with my own biggest tooth. Im not saying it was a 7 inch tooth specifically but the piece is 3.3 inches with the start of the bourlette showing along with the tip of the tooth being broken which i think would’ve been an extra 0.7 inches or so. The last photo is a photo of my biggest tooth being 4.7 inches and you can see the difference in width. Along with the root being like 40% of the tooth. Fin Lover
Looks to me like the root is closer to 25% of the total on your last tooth, if you are looking at the root shoulders. It would be more than 25% of the slant height. MarcoSr
With the variation in meg teeth shape, any estimate of size is pure speculation with a fragment like this.
