Real or fake megalodon tooth

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! Ive been offered this Megalodon tooth, its from Indonesia and measures 6.29 inches. I'm assuming 20% of the root has been restored, not too sure though this is the first time of me trying to differentiate fakes in Megalodons.

You can see an obvious color and texture difference:

My favorite things about fossil hunting: getting out of my own head, getting into nature and, if I’m lucky, finding some cool souvenirs.

Also, Meg teeth should have clear and visible serrations and stirrations. On this tooth, they're clearly missing, the whole thing migth be completly fake and carved.

Are good signatures really that important ?

The tooth shape is weird, and non-typical.

Plus, it's from Indonesia. That is the first red flag.  <_<

Lots and lots of genuine Meg teeth come from Indonesia.

But I agree this tooth is very suspicious, at the least a large part of it is reconstructed. Also I don't see any serrations, which are usually very prevalent in Indonesian Meg teeth. I'd stay away from this one.

filled, carved, faked

just for garden-decoration...

e.g. I agree with @Daze: there are some really really good ones from Indonesia on the market, hugh and fantastic. but the relation is 100 to 1 of fake to good, creepy
