New Members trap Posted March 16 New Members Posted March 16 I found this very hard and heavy petrified fossil? off a hill in a ravine by a natural spring on our property after clearing some land. It has kind of a porous exterior. Perhaps part of the head of the bone broke off partially over time? scapula? A rancher said it looks like a cow bone. It is so old and heavy I just don’t know if I buy that. Is it possible timing wise that it would be a fossilized cow or is it possibly prehistoric? Thank you for having a look. not sure of time period to look at.
New Members trap Posted March 16 Author New Members Posted March 16 Hey guys! reposting this with better description and High res pictures with a better camera and measurements. Found this near a natural spring on a hill cliff side in central Texas on the surface after clearing trees from land on the side of a hill kinda of cliff like and eroded. the specimen is hard and heavy, lots of porus holes(see pics) did the lick test and seems like more of a a fossil thank a rock but Im a newbie. i did some recon on the geologic data base for rock type and time period in my area and added that in the images. it tells a little bit about the geological makeup here. Im kinda on the border of two of them. any thoughts are much appreciated and thank you all so much for your time.
New Members trap Posted March 16 Author New Members Posted March 16 possibly cast of a lungfish burrow? or tree?
Balance Posted March 17 Posted March 17 You’re in the “looks like a fossil shape” club at least! That’s seriously a small group of rock fossil identifications around here. Thanks for sharing! Jo
val horn Posted March 17 Posted March 17 This is not a bone. There are s number of smaller marine fossils within your rock , so you do have fossils but the big piece is limestone not bone 1

ClearLake Posted March 17 Posted March 17 Yes, this very much looks like a chunk of weathered limestone. I believe you can see molds/casts of invertebrate fossils in the areas that look broken. 1
