tinabrand
Can anyone help me understand what this is, or what causes this kind of texture?
Mark Kmiecik
It looks like boxwork? -- a very nice specimen. Type of crystalline structure formed geologically. Unusual color. 1 1 Mark. Kato
It does look like boxwork which is typically calcite based. I've not seen a lot of it except in caves and it's usually a lighter color like off white or yellowish as they were formed in voids in the limestone formations. Perhaps the host rock is a gray limestone and the boxwork is precipitate formation of that limestone itself (to explain the color). I do have some selenite boxwork but the structures are not as finely honeycombed as yours. I'm not familiar with process that creates formation but it could easily be researched. Mark Kmiecik
It may also be something manmade -- I haven't ruled that out yet. 1 Mark. Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
