Hey, going through some finds of last year i came across this tiny Hexanchid tooth.

0,9cm x 0,5cm, Miocene/Pliocene, Antwerp area, Belgium

I've seen Hexanchid posterior teeth before and they look quite different..

(from the book 'Neogene Sharks of Antwerp' by Stephane Knoll)

Could mine be juvenile Notorynchus or Hexanchus?

Thx,

Dries

I believe you are on the right track, but wrong genus.  I suggest posterior Notorhynchus cepedianus

Thx! So rather posterior instead of juvenile?

As for Notorynchus primigenius posterior tooth looks kinda the same like the Hexanchus one, but neither have distinguishable cusps like the tooth i've Found..

I'm not referring to the absolute posterior tooth but one of the ones towards the back of the mouth

Hi,

They are called commissural teeth, and those of this family seem very difficult to identify because they look like other species.

Noting where the tooth was found, I do believe @hemipristis is correct that it is Notorynchus.
