Possible fossilised bone found last week in the sand. I'd like some assistance to identify it please.

To my eye, this looks modern. You can always try the burn test to be sure.

It looks recent and sawed-off, so possible butchery remains. I don't know the animal it originates from.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I agree with probably modern, but not necessarily with sawn off. Could be beach erosion in my eyes.

Best regards,

J

That is half of an atlas vertebra of a cow.

I would agree, probably modern and probably butchered (cut looks pretty smooth and nearly perfectly in the center, but it is a bit tumbled around so could be natural).

You didn’t give us a size, but all the features match up pretty well with a cow. The atlas is the first vertebra, right behind the skull.

I can't say I would've figured it out on my own, but now that @ClearLakehas said it, I agree with partial atlas vetebra.  Those holes are pretty distinctive, and it looks like a modern piece.

Thank you all for your help with this.  From your feedback it doesn't sound as if it's an item of value or historical interest, but I thought it was worth checking.

@Caroline7 You have a good eye! You clearly realized this was bone.  I would've picked it up to learn more as well.
