Petrified wood

Found some really beautiful petrified wood by a construction site in the college station, TX area. I was wondering if anyone has tips/tricks/resources to further characterize petrified wood specimens?

The more diagnostic features are sometimes visible on the ends of the piece. Vessels can sometimes be seen in angiosperm (hard) woods. It's usually not a simple thing to do though.
