Im a complete rookie here but I found a few of these rocks about 50 ft underground during an excavation. Who knows, maybe it’s common but personally , I am fascinated! Any insight?

These are commonly mistaken for fossil plants.

Is it annoying for clueless people like myself to ask for help in identifying? I have another rock that has unique patterns but I don’t want to be “that guy”

It is harmless to ask questions when you are respectfully seeking the vast knowledge held in this community. The purpose of the ID page is to share that knowledge, and it would be poor form if someone were to react with hostility towards a genuine quandary. What is annoying is when people think they've found a "petrified dinosaur head" or "complete dinosaur embryo" in a place like Kentucky or Indiana (no Mesozoic rocks) and reject any community feedback when they don't receive confirmation to their misidentification, in which case an admin like Tim would lock the thread, which is the best course of action.

Not at all.  I (and other members) can still learn about geological occurrences and other things that I (we) might not be familiar with from other areas through these posts. I didn't know what boxwork, slickensides, etc. was before reading some "rock" posts on here.
