Ramo
I spent most of the day today hiking over miles of Blue Hill Shale, and finally had a little luck collecting ammonites in this formation. Most are just parts and pieces, but one is a good one in a concretion with a bunch of pyrite. I have a couple photos of this one, but you can't make out the ammonite in it very good. I was planning on gluing it back together, and starting to work on it from the outside-in with an engraver. (Or someone could just make me an offer I can't refuse it and prep it out yourself, then I wouldn't have to worry about destroying it!!) Enjoy the photos. Ramo
Thanks, Tracer. I got it at Dino Ridge in Denver just this summer. I've ran it through the washing maching a few times to give it that nice patina. Terry Dactyll
bowkill....The one that looks complete in the top right photo looks like there is a seperation layer between the ammonite and matrix....the matrix has cleanly come away and the rest of this wants teasing off piece by piece using a vibrating sharp point without actually touching the fossil... an airpen or electric engraver should do it I think... Oh-Man
Cool finds Ramo. Apparently we have some guys working in Kansas right now so I suddenly think I'll look for an excuse to drive up there! Of course I would have to drag you ptychodus hunting if I do! Most likely this is wishful thinking, but who knows what seeds I can plant in my boss' head... Owen What is geology? "Rocks for Jocks!"
