Borges
What is the difference between the trilobites from Morocco:Diacalymene ouzregui, Flexicolymene tzarensis e Calymene sp? The three are the same trilobites or are different? Thanks Carlos
piranha
Both species are from the Anti-Atlas Region, Ktaoua clay and sandstone group. F.ouzregui and F.tazarinensis are the only valid species described by Destombes. The exact morphological differences in these calymenids are not known to me. The following reference should help move you forward for the answers. Good Luck! Flexicalymene ouzregui Link Upper Ordovician - Ashgill (lower) Tazzarine des Aït-Atta, Tarhbalt (Maïder) upper argillite formation Flexicalymene tazarinensis LINK Upper Ordovician - Caradoc (upper) Tiouririne upper sandstone formation, or its western equivalent Rouid Aissa REFERENCE: Destombes, Jacques (1967) Distribution et affinites des genres de trilobites de l'ordovicien de l'Anti-Atlas (Maroc). piranha
There are also 2-3 (one is uncertain) species of the trilobite Calymenella decribed from the same formations as F.ouzregui and F.tazarinensis. The prow shaped cephalic process and gigantism in comparison to Flexicalymene being the defining characteristics. There are no subtleties on this bug! The Calymenella presented here is 14cm (5.5")
piranha
Addendum: Additional research indicates that among the Moroccan calymenids the genus Colpocoryphe on casual observation also appears to be the same trilobite as F.ouzregui and F.tazarinensis. The main differentiation between Colpocoryphe and Flexicalymene being a straight projection in front of the glabella in the former and a curved upturned projection in the latter. All of the genera are mostly problematic given the generally beat up and weathered condition of the fossils. Recent expert opinion is reticent to inform with any degree of specificity given the lack of complete specimens for evaluation.
