Swatara Creek Mahantango

For about a year now, I've been hearing about a fossil pit inside Swatara Creek State Park that's supposed to have good marine fossils, including a few trilos. Since Thursday was beautiful, and I had a free couple of hours before work, I decided to check it out. This was a solo scouting trip, to see if it would be worth bringing the boys sometime. I did find it, and found a few small brachs, but it seems to be seriously picked over, and the fossils are extremely fragile. Some of you may recognize it as the site where material from the I 81 underpass was deposited when that site was closed in '94. Of course, all of that material is gon, gone, GONE! Still, it was a beautiful day to be out and picking rocks, and I don't regret going, one bit!

Here are the brachs I found. See if you can find the one in-situ! BTW, ther is one specimen in the shots, that I admit isn't a brach. Is it a coral of some type, or maybe a bryozoan? The pics don't quite show, but it's roughly cone shapes, and reminds me of the tip of a strawberry. Thanks!

Neat finds. Sometimes all a spot that has been overpicked needs is a good rain. Good luck!

Fossils are simply one of the coolest things on earth--discovering them is just marvelous! Makes you all giddy inside!
