THobern
This is the newest tooth in my collection, and easily my favourite already. It's a 5 15/16" meg from Bakersfield, California. There's a slight pathological twist to the blade (more pronounced in person), wrinkling and great colours. Add to that, no repairs! I love the rush that you get from having a new fossil. siteseer
THobern, That is a very special tooth. As you know, a 5-inch tooth from Bakersfield is big/very big and anything over 5 1/2 is huge. Six-inch are rarest of the rare. I know of only two found by two different collectors (much rarer than a once-in-a-lifetime specimen). Your tooth is incredibly unusual for its completeness at that size (bigger teeth tend to be at least somewhat beat-up) and its great color. That could be one of the best-preserved megs for its size ever found in the STH Bonebed. I'll ask a friend about it. Without putting you on the spot in asking the source, I would guess it came from an old collection although it's also unusually clean for an old collection piece (some people used to really goop up their teeth with shellac or glyptol). THobern
I bought it from a collector who purchased the tooth from the finder, who found it around a decade ago. Edited June 14, 2011 by THobern
