edd
It's a helgramite... it's nice and weird. Edited July 28, 2011 by edd " We're all puppets, I'm just a puppet who can see the strings. "
Ramo
Also called a Dobson fly. That is a male. The females don't have those showy mouthparts. For one species to mourn the death of another is a new thing under the sun. -Aldo Leopold
worthy 55
Cool, I have seem bugs like that before but much smaller and with out those spears this one was a big one. Thanks guys. It's my bone!!!
MikeD
That's awesome. Haven't seen one in a long time. Dobson Fly is correct. Helgramite (as edd said) is the larval stage (I think we called them go-devils when I was a kid). Helgramites are good for fish bait.
flyguy784
Hellgramites are GREAT fishing bait, for those that fish with bait that is. Many flys try to immitate them. When fishing the Susquehanna river at night in the summer, wadeing. They will often climb out of the water and up your leg to morph. Now I'm not generaly not afraid of bugs but that really creeps you out. They're so big and nasty, especially in the dark. Yikes!
