Thank You Son!

My son stopped by to tell me about a fossil he found while fishing. Of course I insisted that he take me there.

This is what he found. Awesome internal mold that I've yet to determine if it's gastropod or cephalopod.

Then after poking around, OMG!!! My first plant finds!

And some crushed stems, maybe Calamites with fern fragments.

Very nice flora. First finds aren't usually that impressive. Your mollusk is a gastropod. The only cephalopods I know of that coil in a moving plane have rows of tubercles or other ornamentation

Thanks Mike.

Thanks for the id help Bob. Makes sense the way you explained it. I have another internal mold that I found awhile back. I will post in ID section tonight for verification. I believe it is a cephalopod (ammonite), and will explain why I think so, then.

Great finds.... Mind if I ask if they were found local to you? I grew up in KC, and my parents still live there. I never did any fossil hunting up there. It might be fun to poke around up there when I visit though and try and find a spot.

I actually live in Edwardsville, but grew up in rural LV county, so that will always be home to me. I put KC as location just for simplicity sake.

I found the fossils on Stranger creek in Linwood under K32 bridge. It was a VERY small area I found them in and picked it over pretty good, but intend on exploring more of the creek and creeks that feed it. There apparently were coal mines in Leavenworth, but I'm yet to find them or any contact info for permission. I usually hit roadcuts for brachs, crinoids, etc., and can't wait to get to the sandbars now that the river is somewhat receding.

So, if you come to KC, PM me and maybe we could meet up.

Good luck, and all the best!

Thank you for the info. I'm pretty sure I know exactly where you are talking about. I will be sure to let you know if I make it back up anytime soon. The river down here is supposedly pretty good as well. However, I am still looking/planning good access. I don't have a boat or anything.

Sometimes I am up into parts of Kansas for work. I will let you know if I find any promising spots.

Thanks again.

That's great Dan!

Mine shares my interests; nature, music, fishing, etc., and we're best buds, but he has a one track mind when we go to the field. And water MUST be involved! (cell phone service, too)
