Sharkbyte
I know very little about plant fossils of any type and I am wanting to add a nice Fern fosil plate to my collection but since I know nothing about them, I am asking for advice about this specific Fern Plate. I want a large size display peice and this one fits that requirement nicely and it is very busy with fern fossils. Another plus. My concern is, I don't want any fossils that are enhanced to bring the image out. Are these fern fossils found just this crisp and bold or has something been professionally done to inhance the image. This auction ends tomorrow so I am hoping this gets to some of the Fern experts out there. Thanks for any help. Fossildude19
Bobby, These ferns can be found like that at St. Clair- I've never heard of anyone doing anything to them to enhance them - although I suppose you could paint them or chalk them. Most likely it is real, and just that way. As an aside, Some people do use hairspray to keep the colored coating from washing off of the fossil. Hope this helps. piranha
Looks like a very nice example. The St. Clair ferns are quite abundant so there is generally nothing to worry about unless someone shellacs the surface. Search around ebay and internet dealers as the prices are competitive and should be a very good buyers market on this material. Post it when it arrives. Good Luck! Edit: Dueling post...... good one Tim! Edited August 22, 2011 by piranha
Sharkbyte
Thanks Tim, It does help a lot. I don't have a problem with them standing out white because it actually makes them show up better but I just want it to be natural, so yes that helps a lot. Thanks for your time. Sharkbyte
Thanks Piranha, I am going to bid on it based on, I like the looks of it and the response that I have had from members like yourself. Maybe I will win it. If not, then there are 15 pages of fern fossils on ebay so I am sure I can find another one I like. Appreciate the reply and if I win, I will post a picture of it.
