cowsharks
I wonder what kind of "damage" the extra water will do to the mine at Lee Creek. I seem to recall several years ago a hurricane hit that area and the mine stopped fossil collecting for a few seasons. I know the mine had already cancelled collecting for this Fall 2011 season, but if flooding is real bad, could it impact next season too? Hope not. Daryl. JohnJ
I have lived in coastal NC for most of my life. I have been through 20 or so hurricanes, some direct hits some not. Bertha, Fran and Floyd were the 3 worst that I can remember; i was very young when Donna came through. Don't take these things lightly;y. Even days and weeks after the storm there can be dangerous conditions along waters edge and cliffs. It's going to be a rough night and day , so everyone in Irene's path stay safe and use your head. Take care, Pete. Wish you the best. The human mind has the ability to believe anything is true. - JJ

darrow
for the uninitiated in Irenes path... When evacuation orders are issued consider the following before deciding to ignore the order. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orders_of_magnitude_(energy) 4184 joules = the energy released by explosion of one gram of TNT 100,000,000 joules = the kinetic energy of a 55 tonne aircraft at typical landing speed (59 m/s or 115 knots) 63,000,000,000,000 joules = the approximate yield of the Little Boy atomic bomb detonated over Hiroshima, Japan at the end of World War II 600,000,000,000,000 joules = the energy released by an average hurricane in one second

sixgill pete
Got my electricity back about 2 hours ago, and I am one of the fortunate ones. Some people in Carteret County wont have it for up to 3 weeks they say. No damage to my house, I had 3 trees uprooted and lots and lots of limbs. Lots of trees down all over, some on top of cars and houses. In my area it wasn't to bad, no where near the damage that other storms brought. However there is severe damage in some areas Hope everyone else is OK> Bulldozers and dirt Bulldozers and dirt behind the trailer, my desert Them red clay piles are heaven on earth I get my rocks off, bulldozers and dirt Patterson Hood; Drive-By Truckers May 2016 May 2012 Aug 2013, May 2016, Apr 2020 Oct 2022
