The One That Got Away

I'll have to keep you posted on how this clean up goes, but today my wife and I tried a new spot and we found some parts of what would have been a big mosasaur. So far we have this braincase that was eroded out, a bunch of rib pieces that were eroded out, and who knows what else is in the couple hundred pounds of rock with some pieces in it. Doesn't look like any of the toothy parts are there, but we'll see.

(I also included a picture of a bird nest with a front and back door!)

I hope you have the secondary finds in the other rock. Cool nest.

Yea, I couldn't find a left hand glove.

(A little acetone accidently poured into the blisters, made them seem almost pleasant after the stinging went away!)

The anticipation can be a killer, can't it?

Did you find these eroded out and in a creek bed or did you recover them where you may find some more pieces.?

Keep us posted.

It looks like it was scattered on the sea floor before fossilization. We found a small squalicorax tooth next to a rib, and here are a few pictures of the progress.

I think it's the most mosasaur skull I've ever seen without even one single mosasaur tooth!

I just started working on one in north MS recently as well. Up to around 12 verts and some other partial bones that are just way too fragile. No teeth here either but am staying hopeful that a skull with pop up eventually ;).

Cool stuff, keep going!
