Angus Stydens
Like Erik M, I also collect shark teeth from the nocturnal vampire shark, noctis translyvanicus. See the attached photos of a full grown adult and a juvenile vampire shark. I was going to save this next part for Halloween, but since the subject of pathological teeth came up first, I will post this here now. A few years ago I was inspired to write a poem about the vampire shark, and I posted it on another forum just for kicks. I am not much of a poet, but here is my best shot. It is a piece called The Vampire Shark (how appropriate, huh?) about the terrifying vampire sharks that dwell in our ocean's depths. The Vampire Shark Rumors run deep of a hideous creep who sleeps in Davy Jone’s locker, and if you should dare to peek in there, be prepared for a terrible shocker. For a vampire shark lies still in the dark, waiting for the daylight to dim far below deck in his old shipwreck, 'til the moon and the tides will awake him. Sinewy and sinister, and quick to administer a bite to the neck, yes it’s true. This transatlantic Transylvanian once in a vein, will drain you. Oh Neptune, Poseidon! With sharp pointed tridents Help keep this beast at bay. For sharpened sticks, the traditional fix in oceans are scarce, they say. Shiver me timbers, shivers down your spine! Heed the hagfish, the lampreys and eels. With the vampire shark they’re familiar And will feed on what’s left of his meals. So dine from the sea, but just listen to me Let doubt not be part of your reasoning. When feasting on fish, do as you wish, just use garlic as part of the seasoning!
