erose
I am giving a talk on fossil collecting in a few weeks. I want to touch on the prehistorical use of fossils. I know there are a few instances of fossils being found within an archeological context. These were sometimes thought to be jewelry. But I am having little luck searching the web and despite the huge number of books I own the best I can do is some references to North American native use of crinoid columnals for necklaces. So if anyone can point me to books, papers, websites, etc. it would be most welcome.

Fossildude19
Tim, Thanks! What did you search for? I just have the worst luck no matter how I phrase my searches... I tried a number of search terms. "Fossils + Ancient Civilizations+ Use." I tried "How did Ancient civilizations use fossils?" and "How did native americans use fossils." More Links HERE and HERE . I used " carved ammonite snake head" for these. Remembered seeing pictures of one in one of my fossil books. See these links as well! Early Greeks fossils There's a PDF included in this one. Sometimes, not often, but sometimes I get lucky with the searches. Regards, Edits for additional links. FossilForKids
In Florida I use to find Wampum(sp) beeds that came from worm burrows and I have seen megs that were used as tools and jewelry. If only my teeth are so prized a million years from now!
