Gray Ghost 27
For the folks who are interested in a free program for editing you photos, this is a great free download and is simple to use and has really good results. Google "picasa 3" and follow the download instructions, and the best part its free. Good luck and happy hunting.
glacialerratic
Thanks for the tip! I'm currently using PhotoScape, another free download. I like it's brightness editing function, and it has a sharpness function, which is great. It does not have a magic wand, or a close-subject-crop. The 1gb of free storage space is pretty cool, but what other aspects of "picasa 3" do you like?
Fossildude19
I agree, Picasa is a really intuitive and easy to use program. Very easy to lighten your photos, adjust contrast, crop, and add text. I'll have to try Photoscape - thanks for mentioning that, Tim. Kosmoceras
Sounds good. Currently I am using Paint.net, but that program looks worth trying.

Indy
Good Discussion There are a number of photo editing programs available However, the quality of the edited image depends greatly on the quality of the original image. I can take a poor original and edit it so it looks OK. However, if I start with a clear focused original image...The edited image can be KILLER. So...the first step in creating a good image is to take several images utilizing the best lighting (I prefer full natural sunlight) and with the camera lens at various distances from the fossil. Save the best image and trash the rest. The best image is the one you wish to edit Barry Flash from the Past (Show Us Your Fossils)MAPS Fossil Show

Tachikoma_kun
GIMP, horrible interface, stupid name, incredibly powerful, and free.
Caleb
I also use GIMP(GNU Image Manipulation Program). It's basically a less friendly but free version of Photoshop. It can do pretty much anything you want it to... if you can figure out how to do it. Caleb Midwestpaleo.com
Jocky
Paint Shop Pro 7. Its eons old but I found a way of adding Photoshop Plugins and have been using it for years. It comes with Animation Shop and I use that a lot for my indoor hobby of 3D Animation using Cinema 4D. Example below. I have been using the monicker of 407370 for a long time on other forums: CHEERS Edited October 14, 2011 by Jocky
xonenine
GIMP, horrible interface, stupid name, incredibly powerful, and free. There is a plugin, namely Gimpshop, that changes the user interface to a generic Adobe style... Gimpshop Home Oooh, excellent, will look at that tonight, thanks! I know they were changing the interface in the next version, but this will be most welcome!
