sixgill pete
I found this one week ago and wanted to share it again, since I have a positive ID. It is a small, about 6mm long micro echnoid, Echinocyamus parvus. I found it at the Martin Marietta Quarry in Richlands, NC. Casle Hayne formation, Eocene in age. Until finding this one, I had no idea that echnoids came in micro sizes, but I should have known, since I have quite a few micros from Lee Creek and Egem, Belgium. I think this little thing is really cool. Front: Back: this picture may be a little fuzzy, but I added it to show the size: Bulldozers and dirt Bulldozers and dirt behind the trailer, my desert Them red clay piles are heaven on earth I get my rocks off, bulldozers and dirt Patterson Hood; Drive-By Truckers May 2016 May 2012 Aug 2013, May 2016, Apr 2020 Oct 2022
JohnJ
It's amazing that the tiny ones survive any damage. Good find. The human mind has the ability to believe anything is true. - JJ
Al Dente
Your Echinocyamus is nicely preserved. About 10 years ago you would be able to pick these up in great numbers at Richlands Quarry but they usually had calcite overgrowth that would mask the fine detail. I found six others that day, all in the same small area. The others have the overgrowth you are talking about.
