Fitch
At least that's what it looks like to me, but there were no maples in the Carboniferous.
piranha
Hi Fitch, This could be Trigonocarpus which is one of the more commonly known seed forms from Carboniferous floras around the world.
Fitch
It doesn't look like Trigonocarpus to me, but you could be right.
piranha
Should have been more specific... perhaps partially covered by matrix. Looks like the portion on the left could be prepped a bit?
Fitch
It's not been prepped any. To me it looks like some kind of seed with a tail.
piranha
Attached are figures of Trigonocarpus sp. and note that many exhibit a tail-like feature which is actually a "neck" structure of tissue surrounding the micropylar extension. I was suggesting that prepping the left portion shown in your photo may reveal additional features to confirm a possible ID.
Fitch
Oh ok, I see now, other pics I've seen of them don't have the neck structure, thanks.
Terry Dactyll
Lepidostrobophyllum alatum....(Ithink thats how you spell it) is a possibility... If I was on my PC I could load a few pictures to compare... Cheers Steve... And Welcome if your a New Member...
