John Hamilton
Are there fossil sites in Cumberland County, NC other than Willis Creek (locality 12 in Bulletin 89, NC Geological Survey)? I am really curious to know if there are sites along the Cape Fear and Little River that are accessible on foot since I don't have a boat. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Sharkbyte
Hello John, Don't hold me to it but I believe I read somewhere that the only Cumberland County material was near the cumberland/bladen county line and may even be the site you mentioned. The olny thing I have ever found fossilized in Cumberland County is petrified wood and not in abundance. I do know of a few land sites in North Carolina though that I would be willing to invite you along the next time that I am able to get away and go collecting. Bobby Bobby, The site you mentioned is in fact the same one I was referring to. Unfortunately I was not able to locate it yesterday while I was out looking. I guess that's the risk you take when you are using reference material printed more than 20 years ago. I would love to take you up on your invitation so please feel free to contact me when you have time to go collecting.

lawooten
I live in Cumberland County and in artical 89 they give Willis Creek but the location is not hwy 87. They built on it. Artical 89 was published in 1989 and I found that a lot of those sites are now posted. The Elizebethtowm site in Bladen Co. was great but bc. a collector was killed there while collecting it is closed to collecting and they will get you if you go in. Too bad I loved that place. Some site the artical gives on rivers aren't what they cracked up to be. To put it to the point Artical 89 is very much out of date and needs up dating badly! It keeps selling b/c people aren't told by even clubs that it is out of date and that is sad. On the Cape Fear Phobus Landing they give but the water level has to be way down and that doesn't happen much. I know a great creek off the Cape River and Hwy 87 but collecting it not aloud. On talking to him I was told how one day a van full of university folks where in his creek. Really ticked him off b/c he did not give them the ok. He went to the college and before the dean told the professor it is posted stay off. This man used to let people collect but they undercut banks to where trees fell and he had to have them cut out. Plus people take down his no tresspassing signs. He just got tired of people not asking. That is what spoils it for collectors. My husband and I have a good number of private site we can go to now just b/c we ask. The best days are spent collecting fossils
